ABOUT

THE ARTIST

Alexandre Freire

Born in Rio de Janeiro in 1971, where he lived until seven years old, Alexandre Freire also lived in Manaus and São Paulo before arriving in Florianópolis, where he lives and works since 1992. He graduated in Architecture and Urbanism at Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina. While still a graduation student, he worked as an intern at the National Historical and Artistic Heritage Institute (IPHAN). As an architect, his research and performance are influenced by trends in modern architecture, such as Vilanova Artigas, Affonso Reidy works, among other modern architects. He started his career in Visual Arts in 2003, through the support of painting, influenced by the processes of photography and graphic arts. Alexandre's early works portray a memory of urban and social architecture from a period of youth, imbued with colors and related themes of coastal cities. From 2004 to 2014 he was represented by Cor Galeria de Arte, located in Florianópolis. In 2015 he forcibly stops producing due to a cancer treatment. In 2019, when he resumes his artistic research, developing a new scope of exploration. The influence of the methodology of architectural traces, allied to a concrete visuality boost Alexandre's production. In his current research, the artist explores the human relations of our time, using painting as a language and representations of visual syntheses to deal with this contemporary state. Starting from an aesthetic interest in compositional concepts of modern art, more specifically the concrete movement. Visual syntheses gain strength in imagery constructions, where the symbology of the boat and its shadow is the compositional interest of the last series. The boat appears in more recent works as a representation of the individual who wanders through his social environment in an increasingly liquid form, however, trapped between two fluids: the atmosphere, of unattainable ideals and the sea of infinite possibilities, which become tangible, become increasingly ephemeral. The construction of unity in the series currently takes place through a kind of anamnesis, an intimate prospection of a previous contemplative state of latent essential truths. In this sense, the predominance of representations of horizontal lines relates to an attempt to distribute the “weight” of reality and its center of gravity. The beginning of this artistic investigation comes from the encounter with a short poem by Sophia de Mello Breyner Andersen: “When I die, I will return to seek the moments that I did not live by the sea”.
